thequest family,

Sometimes life is heart-wrenching.  Over the past month or more, there are a variety of things going on in people's lives. Many losses are happening through deaths, transitions, personal grief's and more.  Our hearts are torn in many directions. Sometimes we need some handles on how to cope personally and how to help others.

One of the most enlightening looks at grieving comes from the book of Job.  Once a pastor scoured Job’s words searching for what Job himself desired in the way of comfort during his distress.  The pastor came upon several passages that indicated “Job’s Six Cries for Comfort."* The listing of these six are practical steps to aid anyone in being a comfort to those who are hurting.

1. The Cry for Company--Just be there

13 "He has alienated my brothers from me; my acquaintances are completely estranged from me. 14 My kinsmen have gone away; my friends have forgotten me. 15 My guests and my maidservants count me a stranger; they look upon me as an alien. 16 I summon my servant, but he does not answer, though I beg him with my own mouth. 17 My breath is offensive to my wife; I am loathsome to my own brothers. 18 Even the little boys scorn me; when I appear, they ridicule me. 19 All my intimate friends detest me; those I love have turned against me.   Job 19:13-19

2. The Cry for a Listening Ear--Listen

13 "Keep silent and let me speak; then let come to me what may.

5 If only you would be altogether silent! For you, that would be wisdom.

4 You, however, smear me with lies; you are worthless physicians, all of you!

Job 13:13, 5, 4

How long will you torment me and crush me with words?   Job 19:2

3. The Cry for Attentive Ears--Listen intently

Listen carefully to my words; let your ears take in what I say.  Job 13:17

Listen carefully to my words; let this be the consolation you give me.  Job 21:2

4. The Cry for Compassion or Pity--Empathize do not sympathize

Have pity on me, my friends, have pity, for the hand of God has struck me.  Job 19:21

Note on use of terms: sympathy is more like "I am not personally identifying with that person, as such. Instead, I am sort of "on the outside looking in," as it were, expressing my condolences." On the other hand, empathy is more like "I am personally together with the person--feeling sorrow, embracing where they are and being with them in it."

5. The Cry for Prayer--Do the work of Prayer

My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God;   Job 16:20

If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand upon us both.

Job 9:33

6. The Cry for Kindness--Do something for the person

A despairing man should have the devotion of his friends,

even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.   Job 6:14

Love one another.  That's the mark of a disciple of Jesus.  Glad to pass on some tips on expressing that to others.

Press on,

Mike

Women's Bible Club

A little report from the first time: "We had a great time of prayer and study around the book of Ruth. We mainly focused on the themes of faith and obedience as expressed through Ruth's decision to follow Naomi and her actions that proceeded from that decision throughout the rest of the book. We also looked a bit at the humbleness in Ruth's character as she made these choices."
Next get together is Sunday April 27th. For more details contact Amy Paragon HERE

Bible Give-A-Way Blooming in Paris!
Scoop from Rob & Nichole:  "Last week we passed out 83 Bibles. Today we gave away over 70. The highlight of the morning was seeing the students returning that took Bibles last week. Three people stopped by to ask for more information.

One young man dropped by the free Bible table today for the soul purpose of giving thanks. He came by and said, "I just wanted to thank you, last week you gave me a Bible and I wanted you to know that I started reading it. Thank you for the Bible you gave me, thank you immensely!"

So we pass this thanks on to you! Thank you for your ongoing support of this ministry! May God receive the glory!  4 new posts online. Including photos of the Bible Table, Debate Club, Spiritual Retreat at the Château! Check it out here

Pray for the Totzke's

This weekend Larry and Sylvia will be in Telford, PA going through a rigorous assessment regarding church planting. This is an important piece of the puzzle for their development and for the development of Cap City Grace Church.  Please pray for them.

Letter about the loss of one in our family

Dear quest family,

It is with heavy heart that I pass on to you this information concerning the unexpected passing of Chinese international student, Wu Juan, whom many of us knew from her participation in the Frambes House Church while she was a student at OSU.  Juan (she had Americanized her name to Juana) took her own life early last Friday morning.  Although she had a very good visit back to China over the holiday break, she became too distraught over the pressures of her academic workload to feel that life was worth continuing.

Juan came to thequest through God's providence when she found a place to live at the Frambes Avenue house owned by former quester, Tom Pappas.  She had been introduced to Christianity while still in China; however, she solidified her faith and trust in Jesus Christ as her personal savior early in her time at OSU, and she was one of the very first questers to be baptized.  She was a loyal participant in the Frambes House Church and later at the Grace Brethren Church of Columbus before she decided to change her major and move to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.  There, she found a church home and made many friends in the Richmond Community of Grace Church.

Please read the two emails below from Community of Grace Pastor Dave Kennedy for information on how you can remember Juan in her passing.

In Jesus,

Larry Totzke

Hello, my name is Dave Kennedy, Juana’s Pastor from Community of Grace Church in Richmond, Virginia.  I am glad that we have been able both to grieve and share together during this loss of our dear friend, Juana.  She was such a joy to me, and on behalf of our church, we loved her deeply.  Today, our church family shared together the loss of our dear sister, and many prayed aloud during our service for the upcoming details for her family.
I have been in phone contact with various officials (friends) of Juana’s @ VCU – her advisor, the Office of International Students, and the chairperson of the psychology department.  I have been invited to come to VCU’s counseling center tomorrow @ 11am where I will meet more of those who were privileged to call Juana their friend.
Our church will hold a Memorial Service which is open to all who loved Juana.  This is developing as our desire is to work in partnership with Juana’s network of friends from the VCU community and throughout the United States.  I am so blessed that many have offered their help to me (and to one another) so that this memorial time can be the best that Juana would wish.  We know that there are many details yet to be confirmed, so we know that this service will be planned at some time in the future to include Juana’s family when they come.  We will keep you informed as soon as details become clear in case you would like to attend.
Our church is also looking into establishing a Memorial Fund in Juana’s name in which all proceeds would be given to Juana’s family for whatever expenses or needs they have.  I will be working with one of our elders & our treasurer to ensure that there is strict accountability with this fund.
I will be in Pennsylvania Wednesday thru Saturday of this coming week; however this is my laptop email & it follows me wherever I am.  In addition, my cell # is 804/241-3517.  I am so glad that many are working together to make this time a great demonstration of love for Juana & her family.  Please include me in all emails concerning plans & ideas concerning Juana.
Thank you so much,
